United
Way Recognizes Crescent River Port Pilots for Giving Back to the
Community
NEW ORLEANS, January 27, 2003 – Answering
the United Way’s request for members of the Maritime
community to participate in this year’s annual giving drive,
the Crescent River Port Pilots led the way with a corporate contribution
of $10,000. The Association then challenged individual pilots to
give to the non-profit organization.
Many pilots have responded at the leadership
level. This is especially important to the United Way this year
because every gift at the leadership level of $1,000 or more will
receive a matching donation from the RosaMary Foundation. Campaign
Chairperson Kim Sport has recognized the pilots’ efforts
in this campaign.
“We’re very excited about the Crescent Pilots’ contributions
to the United Way. They have really taken the lead in the maritime
community. We hope the pilots’ example will encourage others
in the industry to step up. If they do, we will certainly reach our
goal and help the United Way fund vital services in our community,” Sport
said.
All dollars given to the Greater New Orleans United Way are invested
locally. Last year, 700,000 people were helped by the Greater New
Orleans United Way in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines,
St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parishes. The United Way funds 140 health
and human service programs provided by over 80 member and affiliated
agencies.
Other organizations the Crescent Pilots' Association
has given to this year include the American Heart Foundation, Coast
Guard Foundation, Algiers Irish Association, Propeller Club of
New Orleans, Jefferson Dollars for Scholars, Jewish Endowment Foundation,
Little Sisters of the Poor, LA Committee on Human Rights and WRBH – radio
for the blind.
The Crescent River Port Pilots navigate ocean-going vessels in the
Mississippi River between Pilottown and New Orleans. The 108 pilots
come from all over geographically, from Plaquemines Parish to Orleans
and Jefferson Parishes.
